The voice of silence:
intelligence, espionage
and warfare in XX century

Since ancient times, conflicting actors needed to gather information on the enemy’s strength in order to anticipate their moves and get to know their strategies. This special issue aims at contribute to the historiography on espionage as part of late modern conflicts. We are looking for proposal focusing on intelligence actions carried out by war participants within their borders as well as in enemy territory. We will welcome particularly contributions that exploit new archival and documentary sources.

Who were the central actors in intelligence operations? Which agencies or authorities planned and carried out those operations? What networks did they use and activate to reach their goals?

These are some of the topics we would like to address in this monographic issue. We will focus on intelligence operations in twentieth-century conflicts in Europe or elsewhere in the world.

World War II and the Cold War played a crucial role in the creation and development of intelligence services, developing specific military and professional profiles and agencies dedicated to these practices. However, Diacronie will also consider articles related to previous or following conflicts (e.g. the Spanish Civil War) as well as conflicts not directly or indirectly related to World War II.
