For the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, Diacronie dedicates its number to “other Italies”, the ones emerged in the mentalities and cultures outside our national borders. We aim to adopt a “different” point of view, far away from the issues of national identity and history, by matching two broad perspectives that could bring an innovative contribution to general reflections on our country.
First of all, we seek to analyse Italy’s image produced abroad since its the formation, following its further developments. What events have combined to produce these changes? What were the reasons that influenced them? What individual, collective, political and cultural responsibilities have affected the image of Italy beyond its borders?
From this filtered image, we focus then to the actors that have been building the ‘italianness’ outside national borders, since XIX century. Starting with a common origin, the communities of Italian immigrants have set new microcosms of identities (political, social and regional …). Diacronie wants to explore what remained in these communities of Italy – or little Italies – and what was the perception of the homeland for those living in a new country, sometimes having acquired a new nationality.
