SPAIN YEAR ZERO: WAR-LIKE SOLUTION
Analysis and reflections about the Spanish civil war

At the dawn of the twenty first century, we are still immersed in a reflection on the events and vicissitudes that characterized the last century. We cannot avoid dealing with a meticulous analysis of the most important events which have contributed to shape the age we live in, being the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) one of the key events of the “short century” -as Hobsbawm defined it. A war in which an expanding and complex set of not only military, but also political, ideological and social factors were involved and that in spite of their local origin, were responded by the international community. A confrontation that ceased being just verbal, but became physical instead, and which made the two doctrinal models, fascism and anti-fascism face eachother for the first time. Suddenly, Spain became an ideological centre of attraction for a whole generation; volunteers, political activists, adventurers and intellectuals who identified themselves with a conflict that soon extended beyond the Spanish borders. From some’s point of view this confrontation could have changed de course of History, however it became the prelude to a conflict of even more staggering and dramatic proportions: The Second World War.
Taking this idea as a starting point, Diacronie devotes the next dossier July 2011 to considering new proposals, showing that the Spanish Civil War is still a current topic of study. On the one hand an analysis will be devoted to figure out the different expressions of a war that smashed Spain, and on the other hand it will inquire into the ways it has been perceived and into the effects produced beyond its own political and ideological boundaries.
